Gavin Gardner is a bright, funny, unique 17 year old who is a junior at C.W. Baker high school in Baldwinsville, NY. Gavin has been living with an extremely rare disorder known as Moebius Syndrome since birth.
Here is an introduction to Gavin: "My name is Gavin, I am 17 and I have Moebius Syndrome.
Moebius Syndrome is a fascial paralysis where the muscles and the nerves in your face don’t work. As you can see, I cannot blink my eyes, I can only smile slightly on one side and I cannot move my eyes side to side. This makes it challenging for a lot of daily activities such as learning how to drive, reading and writing. Sometimes my eyes get dried out quicker than most people because I can’t blink. Other complications are poor vision, hearing loss, and people not being able to understand me when I am speaking. In July of 2016 there is a Moebius Syndrome conference in Long Beach, California. There, I will be able to meet with specialty doctors and other families going through the same thing that I am." |
Hope Chest for Charity is raising funds to send a young man named Gavin to an east coast conference where he can learn more about Moebius Syndrome, a disorder that is so rare, only about 700 Americans are living with it and Gavin is one of them.
Gavin Gardner is a bright, funny, unique 17 year old who is a junior at C.W. Baker high school in Baldwinsville, NY. Gavin has been living with an extremely rare disorder known as Moebius Syndrome since birth. Moebius syndrome is a non-progressive craniofacial/neurological disorder that manifests itself primarily in facial paralysis. Individuals with Moebius syndrome cannot smile or frown, and do not have lateral eye movements. Many individuals with Moebius syndrome also have skeletal involvement with limb abnormalities or Poland syndrome. People with Moebius syndrome can have respiratory problems, speech and swallowing disorders, visual impairments, sensory integration dysfunction, sleep disorders, weak upper body strength and autism spectrum disorders. The cause of Moebius Syndrome is unknown. More about Moebius Syndrome here --> http://moebiussyndrome.org/about-moebius-syndrome/what-is-moebius-syndrome/ Hope Chest for Charity is raising funds to send Gavin, and his parents to a Moebius Syndrome conference in California. As middle class Americans, Jen & Laura are living paycheck to paycheck like so many of us in this small Central New York community. Jen explains “It would be almost impossible to come up with the money for a conference on the opposite coast. The airfare alone would keep us from eating for a month, not to mention the conference and hotel fees.” Keeping with the mission of Hope Chest for Charity, which raises funds for real individuals in need, we have found that if everyone comes together with a few spare dollars, we can certainly reach our goal, which is to give a gift to Gavin...the gift of knowledge, learning, understanding and acceptance at the Moebius Syndrome Foundation Conference.
